My Fishing Reports
Unless otherwise mentioned, these reports are for West Point Lake. They are colored by my personal preferences ( I guess most are). No reports on live-bait or deep-water fishing (I fish almost exclusively with a fly rod - usually shallow water), no reports that include far-flung locations on the lake (unlike some "bass-masters" on the lake I don't like to "set the water on fire" while racing from one spot to another), and no catfishing reports (`though I'm dying to catch one of those big carp on a fly).

6/29 -6:30am - Yellow Jacket Creek - Very overcast - rained heavy during nite. Fished rip-rap - 16" largemouth very near launch, then nothing. Moved to cove up creek a bit - caught several small fish - some right on bank and some 20' off. Moved to back of Jackson Creek - took 6 nice lm's working spillway from Piney Woods Lake. Fish were stacked there hitting baitfish washed into lake - they took white/sparkle clouser minnow (bucktail streamer). Not only the fish, but a couple of waterbirds were working the spillway (long gradual slope) - you could see the little fish coming from 50' off and the birds were chowing down.

6/25 -6:30pm - Yellow Jacket Creek - Big storm coming from sw - just grazed us with light rain. White popper took 3 nice largemouth off rip-rap before rain started - wind was hard but was fishing on lee side. Moved down toward creek mouth in rain as wind slowed. Casting to swirls & pops got 2 small spots on point. At dusk moved back to cove from Sunday, but couldn't find em there today.

Following report received by email - thanks -

6/22 -6:30am - Yellow Jacket Creek - Very overcast - rained til 6am. Fished rip-rap - caught only a couple of small spots casting to swirls and pops out away from bridge. Heavy cloud to SW, clear for sun in NE. Moved to long creekbed cove - nothing. Started to rain about 8:30, just a sprinkling drizzle w/ no thunder or lightening. Had worked to back of cove by then,so I decided to fish my way out & see what weather would do. Water very calm with rain dimpling the surface. Throwing white popper to bank with slow, stopping, jerky retreive took three largemouth - 17, 18.5, & 19"(and had one on that was maybe bigger)- about 15' off bank. That rain felt better and better!

6/19 - 6pm - main river channel - Flat near Hybrid Point had schooling hybrid - caught dozen or so to 14". Point nearby had schoolies too, but these were spots - they get wild, leaping out of water, going crazy - scattered, but some fish to 16" near bank. Caught `em til my arm was sore.

6/18 - 5:45am - Savannah River tailwater @ Lake Hartwell - When I arrived, it was still dark, but I could hear occassional, loud, slurping rises in flatter water just in front of overlook platform. As sky lightened, I eased into water and cast, almost blind, to splashes. On about my third or fourth cast, I got a hard take with an immediate run upstream. Turned out to be a 14" rainbow - my best fish ever here, as most are smaller stocklings. He took an elk-hair caddis, though at that point I beleive they would have took anything. This turned out to be my only fish, as the rises stopped with sun-up. Huge pods of carp were cruising all over the river - never saw them like this before.

6/16 - 6pm - main river channel & Yellow Jacket Creek - No rip-rap fish. Flat near Hybrid Point had scattered hybrid. Back to bridge - caught 17" spot swirling on top on white popper.

6/14 - 6pm - Whitewater Creek & main river channel -very windy, but warm - lots of traffic. Fished cove off main river - only a couple of fish (1 keeper size ) - 1 came right off bank, the other 20' off. Moved to Whitewater cove - couple of more smallish fish. Big storm blew up suddenly & it poured. Moved to Hybrid Point, and just up above found hybrid in small schools on surface, in the middle of the downpour. As it slacked we caught numerous fish, better size hybrid than we've found schooling previously this year.

6/12 - 6pm - Whitewater Creek & main river channel - finally it's starting to feel like summer - maybe fish can get on track now. Friend and I took the "preacher" fishing, but he wouldn't pray for big fish. Pat caught nice LM in TC cove on rooster tail, I let a big one get off (wiseguy buddy said I was hung on bottom - fishing a popper!). About 7:30, found "schoolie" spots in creek mouth - caught several, all small. Then to main river channel where small hybrid in scattered groups were popping shad on top - caught several more on roostertail, popping cork with white pencil popper, and chartreuse foam popper on a fly rod.

6/8 - 7am - Chattahoochee river channel - cloudy & cool -Fished rip-rap but just one small spot. Moved to "Hybrid Point" to check for schoolies - none there. Still early so I fished windy point to wait - thought I might find `em scattered. Stubbornly, I continued to fish popper in rough water - 18" LM chased and nailed it through the waves. Later found LM schoolies just behind another wind-blown point off main channel - took 3, 12-16".

6/6 - 6pm - Yellow Jacket - windy and cool. Went to coves to escape wind - didn't work. Fish weren't shallow and I couldn't find em deep. Fianlly went to rip-rap and caught 18" LM and couple small spots. Wind still hard and gusty at 9 pm.

6/4 - 6pm - Turkey Creek & main river - weird weather, windy, too - no schooloing in Turkey or Whitewater.Caught a few suspended off bank in 10' to 15'. Found schooling whites at "Hybrid Point" on main channel (fishing is not a competitive sport, but, if you must know: Pat-7, Kent-5).

6/3 - 3pm - Turkey Creek - white foam popper - small mixed spots & LM schooling - caught a bunch. Front & falling barometer must have bigger fish deep - saw fishers deep-cranking points with little success. Two guys at old McGee roadbed on main river channel were catching LM & hybrid on jigged minnows. At dusk fished bridge riprap. Found spots right at edge of channel under bridge - caught 6 or 7 - some keeper size.

6/2 - 6pm - Yellow Jacket Creek - Since the weatherman missed it yesterday, thought I'd bet against him again today. He won, but so did I. No sooner had I launched and fished riprap to bridge than rain started and I could here thunder. Turned around and took out(even tho' bass were popping shad all over surface that was smooth as glass in absence of all boats & wind - I'm a coward when it comes to electrical storms and that 9' lightening rod I fish with). It was early so I decided to wait and see if it'd blow over. Stood on ramp and cast popper down bank. On third cast as popper plopped beside half-submerged bush on bank, the fly disappeared in a sucking whirlpool that materializes beneath it. As I tightened the line, it pulled hard and then turned toward me. The bass felt big, but this time of year they're so frisky it's hard to tell. The bass continued to me and ran right up the ramp beside me, before it turned (dorsal fin out of the water) and went deep. In a minute or two, I landed, measured (18 1/2"), and released him. The rain got heavier and I went home early.

6/1 - 5am - Yellow Jacket Creek - Weatherman missed it this morn - had stars & little moon - spots trapping shad on riprap at daybreak - took chartruese foam popper - most 12-15". After daylight found mixed spots and LM schoolies hitting shad midway in coves. Had to go in to work at 11, but on the way back to the ramp hit riprap again and took 17" LM swirling about 20' off bank.
